We live in Austria and I started with this breed when I got a nice and beautiful dog from a shelter.

I now have 6 Kuvacs from 5 months old to over 12 years old!

They live with me in the house and I'm breeding them and sometimes showing them.

Some are working as therapy dogs and you can see more about that at the link below.

Therapy dog teams Carinthia

They have a good life, they protect our house and garden and we go on long walks through the woods and mountains, and swim in rivers together.

I have Great Pyrenees but also will have another Italian Greyhound if I can talk the rest of the family into it.

I started in the early 90's with pyrs. I chose this breed after some breed research. Decided I like the independence, size and beauty.

How many do I have?

This requires a bit of an explanation.

I co-own a lot. I have no idea how many right now.

I am co-breeder and co-owner with Brigitte Doxtator of Oneida Acres Great Pyrenees in Michigan.

I currently live in the Chicago area but I help make breeding and kennel decisions and show the dogs.

All the dogs reside with Brigitte and her husband, Denver, at the farm.

I will rotate the dogs in and out of my home from the kennel.

I usually also have 1 or 2 that I keep permanently but I just lost my home pyr in June, so I have one of her grand-daughters from the farm.

She may stay permanently :)

My first Pyrenean and I met in 2009, my partner and I had split up , and our two GSDs stayed with him, He wouldnt let them go and I have grown up with animals, we have always had a dogs in the family (and cats and anything else that needed a home) (my family have always been involved in Animal Rescue , currently parrots). I knew it was a only a matter of time before another dog came to share my life , (I just didn't know which breed) and then fate as always stepped in.

In march of 2009 I went to Castleford Pets, a small local pet shop in my area, and there in the garden was a beautiful, huge white male dog, happily opening the conservatory door to his home. I was fascinated, I watched him for a while ( It was at this point that I think I fell in love) I asked the owner numerous questions and he told me that they used to show their dog, but didn't anymore , the owner gave me a lady's name where I could get more information.

I contacted Joyce Stannard from the PMDC GB, who gave me much of the information I needed, then on to the Internet I went checking, researching and looking for any information I could find .

Having done my homework, I decided that this was the breed I wanted, so on I went to find a puppy.

I found a breeder in Gloucester who had 1 puppy left a little girl, so I called her then travelled up to Gloucester and met Belle who was to be my first Pyrenean.

I decided I wanted to show my dog and Belle was a dream , as soon as she was old enough , off we went to KC Puppy Foundation classes, Obedience Classes, and Ringcraft , this was something new to me , I had never shown a dog before, and we both really enjoyed it. When it was time I started entering her into Competitions, then , sadness , she was diagnosed with problems with her legs, so sadly , she couldn't show but what a fun time we had getting her ready , bathing was always the best.

Once you have one Pyrenean you are hooked these dogs are so wonderful and soon enough I longed for another one.

At a show I met, Christine and David Edwards and their beautiful dogs. I am very lucky that they have trusted me with their beautiful male dog, Shane. he is the love of my life, he truly has changed my life.

From the minute he walked into our world , he ruled it. He is the most wonderful gentle, beautiful dog , he is our main Show dog and Master of the house !!, He is spoiled rotten and none of us would ever be without him now. Hes my 'boy'!

This was not the end of our family, Misha joined us as a puppy , she is a lovely girl, still very young and started her show career, she recieved her stud book number , and we now have Misha as our companion dog she comes to the shows with us for the journey but does not show as she is soooo big !

We then got another ! puppy off Christine and Dave Edwards , this one we called Elsa , she is beautiful and has had a huge succesful career in the show ring , she has a RCC and many first behind her we are very proud .

In 2012 we won Crufts we took Shanes first CC and the Best of breed to say this was a honour was a total understatement , we will never forget that moment

My son Alex and I live with all three of these guys and what a wonderful life we have with them

Someone once said to me, once you have had a Pyrenean you will never have anything else, and they rule you, you dont rule them, how true, my whole life has changed, but what a wonderful world I now live in because of them

What is your breed?
Official ENCI/FCI name : Cane da Pastore Maremmano-Abruzzese... I believe it is not correct that outside Italy the breed is only named "maremma sheepdog" - The origin of the dog are the Appennino Mountains and principally the Abruzzo Region

When did you start with these dogs?
I started as an amateur breeder with show dogs around 1990 , but in 2003 I started the Official Kennel " Dell'Antico Tratturo " registered with ENCI ( Italian Kennel Club )

What made you choose your breed?
I knew these working dogs from the young age (my grandfather was a shepherd and a farmer ), so for me it would be not possible to love and know any other breed.

How many do you have?
Currently I have 4 females.( Bella , Rescagnata, Pertecara, Presentosa) that I am breeding with, 3 old "ladies ": (the Champions Filuccia,Irpina and Faleria ), the reproductor Drago , and the young males Mazziere and Carrito

Describe how your dogs live with you:

In the conviction that one cannot deeply know a breed without knowing the environment and the culture that have shaped it, we keep on breeding exclusively Abruzzese rustic bloodlines, fully respecting our pastoral tradition.
Therefore, a selection mainly aimed at maintaining the functional characteristics and the balance of the character and temperament, which have always been the true essence of the breed.

With this aim in mind, many of our dogs are still used to guard flocks and, even those which do not directly work with the sheep, freely live in the open air, in big spaces, together with the animals they guard.

Puppies are raised with the adult dogs and immediately learn the clear "rules" of the group.

All this determines resistance to illnesses and absence of genetic defects and guarantees that our dogs are reliable guard-dogs, never fearful or uselessly aggressive.

Following the morphological ideal of the Abruzzi-sheep-rearing, our adult males always have an "important" head, with a thick leonine (lion-like) mane, often reaching a height of 70/73 cm at the withers and a weight which varies from 50 to 55 kg. They are easily distinguishable from the females, which are generally smaller, with a height of 65/68 cm and a weight of about 40/45 kg.

Both males and females have considerable diameters and a strong bone-structure. The coat is always pure white; the yellow stains, admitted by the official standard, are considered a clear sign of degeneration.

With a consistent selection for working ability, and after the last inspections were carried out,
our kennel of dogs can boast all adult subjetcs hip dysplasia free, XRay certificated by ENCI authorized official districts.

This is the only real and credible certification wich ensure dogs are free of this disabling desease.

To improve the security for our own breeding and those buying our pups, even young subjects (aged less 18 mounth) were XRay certificated by an ENCI authorized official veterinary.

My Mom had seen a ad by a young girl going to school that had the puppies, instead of my Mom getting the puppy I did, we named her Kia and she was the start of my love for the breed, she would be become my soul dog, we had almost 16 years together and when I think of her the tears still fall even if it will be 4 years in December since I lost her.

She was my Companion, she tended to her property and guarded my husband and let us know very quickly when her territory was challenged.

Here is a picture of my Kia

We waited almost 2 years, then we got Lacey from a Breeder in Minnesota, she is Granddaughter to the Number one Kuvasz in USA History Tanner Kuvasz....

Lacey lives up to her Kuvasz name well. she is very stubborn and we have had to do a lot of training.

She guards her property and her home and family very well and does not like strangers in her yard.

She is 16 months old, she is an intensely loyal yet patient pet, who appreciates attention but may also be somewhat aloof or independent especially to strangers.

Lacey has her own Facebook Page and I use her photos to visit pages on Facebook with Children with Brian Tumors, and educate people that have no idea what a Kuvasz is.

Kuvasz are not for every one.

I been brought to tears many times dealing with Lacey but I not trade the love for anything!!

We just got Apache she is 14 weeks old so we have 2 Kuvasz!
I breed Angora goats and most of the dogs are paddock workers though I interact with them frequently. I am more than happy to talk about these dogs and always available for ongoing support.
I may not have all the answers but will give my opinion and help where I can!

With a relatively small property (approx 20 acres) and more than one maremma it is important that the dogs be versatile. Because the stock locations are constantly changing with the weather/season, husbandry needs and feed availability a dog needs to be able to be moved to a different situation/group of livestock with minimal fuss if required.
I usually have the dogs in pairs when out in the paddock but younger dogs need experience flying solo as well!

Also since we live on a busy highway I usually have a dog or two in the house yard. Exactly who varies.

An example of this was when I recently needed to confine the current ‘houseyard’ dog as she’d just had surgery but this would leave the chooks unprotected and foxes are good at seeing a window of opportunity.
So I moved one of the paddock dogs into the house yard which also gives the young female he was with a turn at being on her own with her stock.

The first time I had dealings with this breed was in 1995.
And it was pure coincidence.
I was looking for a puppy as a playmate for my other dog.

In a newspaper was an advertisement to which I responded.

It was stated Tatra dog puppy for sale.

I myself had never heard of this breed.

I went to see and this was my first acquaintance with this breed.

We took her home and when she was with me, I deepened myself in the breed.

This is a breed with a strong character, and
yet I have not a minute regret that I have taken her home.

What is your breed? Maremma

Well now Middy went from 22 Kg to 41Kg he is a lovable boy , who Owns the house inside n out . Even has his own bed n bedroom , a Chair n a 2 sitter couch in the lounge n a 3 sitter couch on the front deck where he spends the most of the day

He enjoys his walks n loves riding in the car.
We breed Hungarian Kuvasz and our pack includes 4 Kuvasz.

Domingo is the dad and International Champion. He is a quiet and rather Kuvasz dog. Chanel is our grandmother.
She has already raised many puppies and cares still like to have the puppies. Xhevahire is 3 years old, International Champion and will have puppies In the spring 2013.
And Arika is already 7 months old and our little sunshine.
Therefore we do not have a white cat with one of the pack.

The American Kennel Club recognizes 150 different dog breeds. There are seven different groups in which the dog can belong.

They are assigned to one of the groups based on what the breed of dog was originally developed for. There is also a miscellaneous group if the dog doesn’t fit into one of the seven. The seven different dog groups are as follows.

The first is the sporting group. These dogs were developed to work with people who hunted birds. A Labrador Retriever would fit into this group. Labs can also be beneficial as guide dogs and in search and rescue.

The second group is the hound group. These dogs were developed to hunt using their scent and sight. This group includes the Whippet, which is the fastest domestic animal of their size. They can run up to 35 mph.

Thirdly, is the working group, which includes the Saint Bernard. They have been known for hundreds of years for their rescue work in the Alps. Other dogs in this group are useful for herding or guarding.

The fourth group is the terrier group, first developed to hunt vermin. The Australian Terrier, one of the smallest terriers, is a part of this group. They were developed to work side by side with the Australian pioneers to aid in tending the sheep or chasing off invaders.

The fifth group is the toy group, developed to be companions. A Japanese Chin is a good example. They like to play, show off, and spend lots of time trying to keep clean and tidy.

The sixth group is the non-sporting group, which overall do not perform the tasks that they were originally developed for. A good example would be the American Eskimo Dog. These dogs were sometimes used in circus acts at the beginning of the century.

The seventh group is the herding group, which was meant to be used in working with livestock. The German Shepherd is in this group. They are not only useful in herding livestock, they are also great companions to humans.

Originally, many dog breeds were first developed for specific uses, such as hunting, companionship, herding, etc. Today, because man has created such a large variety of dog breeds, there is a dog out there to make almost anybody happy. Currently, the most popular dog breed in America is the Labrador Retriever, with the Golden Retriever coming in second.

Description: The Norwegian Buhund is a Spitz type dog, which is of medium size. The muzzle is the same length as the skull. The eyes have black rims, that are oval in shape and dark in colour, their eyes appear sad, but intelligence. They have medium-sized ears that are erect, and mobile. Their legs are straight, with good pads on their feet, these are small and webbed. The tail is over the back and tightly curled this breed has a double coat. This is smooth to the touch while being harsh, with the undercoat is soft and woolly. The colour ranges this dog comes in are; biscuit, from light yellowish red, black, wheaten and wolf-sable. Males are 17 to 18 inches in height where as the bitches are 16 to 17 in height. Males are 31 to 40 pounds in weight whereas the bitches are 26 to 26 inches to 35 lbs in weight.

History: The Norwegian Buhund breed has been discovered in a Viking grave, dating from about the year 900. The Vikings were believed to use this breed, to protect farm animals, herding cattle, and sheep. There is evidence these dogs travelled widely with the Vikings on land and sea. In ancient times, they hunted bears and wolves. This breed can score well in the obedience, and do well in agility trials. This dog is still a working dog guarding homes and families and is still a livestock guard. This is considered to be one of the easiest Spitz breeds to train as it is keen and willing to please. This dog has good learning aptitude. The Norwegian Buhund was first recognized by the AKC in 2009.

Temperament: Here we see a cheerful, active, with untiring vigilance, attentive, and intelligent dog. This breed needs consistent firm leadership, as they can be headstrong, but given the right leadership, they are loving and wish to cuddle up to their owners. The Norwegian Buhund requires physical and mental stimulation, as they are quick to learn, and have lots of energy. Here we see a dog that is a natural guard dog. This breed is good with children. With good obedience training they are a joy to own. This is an active dog and will require lots of exercise. Providing the dog sees you as the pack leader, and you are the alpha, they make a good house pet. Problems will arise if the balance of leadership is not maintained, through good leadership from you.

Health issues: The Norwegian Buhund are prone to an inherited eye issues and hip dysplasia. Grooming: The Norwegian Buhund breed has a short to medium length, easy cared for coat, that does not tangle, or mat, when shedding. Brushing weekly will be fine, but extra brushing is required, when the dog is shedding, this is seasonal and is fairly heavy.

Living conditions: This breed is better in a home with at least a small well fenced garden, as the Norwegian Buhund is very active and will require plenty of exercise. This dog can live in larger apartments, allowing for the fact that the dog needs to roam, a small apartment will not work.

Description: The Tibetan Mastiff is a big dog that is large boned and sturdy. This breed stands at 25-28 inches and the weight is 140-170 pounds. The head is broad, heavy, and has good strength. The muzzle is broad and square in shape. The teeth meet in a scissor or level bite. The nose is black and large. This dog has slightly slanting eyes, which are almond shaped, deep set and all shades of brown. This dog has pendent V shaped ears that hang close to the head. The Tibetan Mastiff has a muscular neck that is slightly arched; the neck has a lot of mane. The front legs are straight and the feet are cat like, and sometimes they have feathering between the toes. The double coat is vast and very thick. The coat comes in brown, black, blue- grey and can have tan markings and a range of shades of gold. They can also have white markings. Their life expectancy is 15 plus years.

History: Like all other Mastiff's and Molossuses, throughout the world, the Tibetan Mastiff is descended from the famous Tibetan dogs. It is believed that the ancient Tibetan Mastiff was around as early as 1100BC. This went on to develop into the dog we call the Tibetan Mastiff today. This breed, for centuries, was cut off from the rest of the world in the Himalayan Mountains, of Tibet. The dog was used for guarding the villages and in some cases only one dog was guarding a whole village. This dog was locked up in the day and at night would patrol the village keeping it safe, as the men would need to work away for days at a time. It was Queen Victoria of England that had the dog first in the mid 1800's and this set the dog status, and the gates opened to the west bring the dog from its isolation. The English wrote the standards, and breeding began in the west. The dog was imported from Nepal, India, Afghanistan and Ladakh to the USA this was in 1970's. The Tibetan Mastiff sadly has become rare in its native country, Tibet. This dog has gained in popularity in the US. The Tibetan Mastiff was first recognized by the ACK in 2006.

Temperament: The Tibetan Mastiff has all the elements they are courageous, fearless, thoughtful, and loyal to their family and is even tempered. This breed reaches full maturity later in life than a lot of breeds but this just adds to the dog's charm. This dog will need a firm and consistent leader and this prevents over protectiveness and wilfulness. Without a great leader, they can become territorial. This dog will love to please you and the family. They are good with children. It is best to socialize the Tibetan Mastiff well as they instinctively guard the family so introducing new things and people from an early age will help them accept new experiences. To help this breed to be stable and reach their full potential, they need good consistent training and good pack leadership form the owner and this will reduce, or eliminate, any problems. Combine daily physical exercise with mental challenges. This dog needs good heel work to reinforce the leadership status, which is that you are the Alpha. This dog will not listen if they think they are stronger minded, and see you as meek. This does not mean hitting and shouting at the dog but a natural leadership style with a calm but firm manner. This is not a breed for the first time dog owner. This dog, in the right hands, makes a wonderful family pet.

Health issues: As with a lot of large breed dogs the Tibetan Mastiff is prone to hip dysplasia. There are also ear infections, a genetic problem called CIDN Canine Inherited Demyelinative Neuropathy sadly this is fatal but is picked up in puppies as young as 7 weeks, the puppy only lives to around four months. Not a true health issue is the fact the Tibetan Mastiff joints and muscle while young need to not be overworked this is important while young and throughout the growing stage. As with any dog it is very important that you make sure they are up to date on all vaccinations, de-wormings and heart worm preventatives. It is also suggested by the majority of licensed veterinarians that you take your puppy or dog in for a check up at least twice each year.

Grooming: The Tibetan mastiff will require grooming and this for the owner is a good brushing regularly. This dog is a heavy shedder for about one month as the weather starts to warm up and then more brushing is needed and this should be daily with the shedding.

Living conditions: The Tibetan Mastiff can live in an apartment providing; there is room as this is a big dog and that the dog has plenty of daily exercise.

Let's think first - why might a dog bark?

If we think along human lines then we are misled.
There are a lot of reasons why a dog barks, and there are different tones to their barks which will help you to get to know why they might be barking at different times.

territory marking. Did you know that the main reason birds 'sing' is to mark their territory, announcing it to other birds? In the same way, the maremma will bark when he hears or smells any other canine or predator presence (and they can hear and smell a LONG way! This announces that their territory is being approached, and it is occupied!

excitement. Well include here other related emotions - agitation, annoyance etc. Vocalising is pretty common amongst all animals. The excited bark usually has quite a distinctive tone.

responsive. If another dog is heard to bark, your maremma is likely to bark in response and the tone of this bark will vary according to the response being given.

boredom. Any dog can learn to bark to release anxiety if they are bored or anxious about being separated from their herd (which may be you and the family if they are a companion dog)

energy to spare. Often this is related to the above point - a dog that is fed too high an energy food, and not given enough exercise to burn up those calories will feel frustrated as they feel the need to burn off that energy, and one way they may do this is by barking. Other dogs may dig or display other destructive behaviours especially when boredom and energy to spare are combined.

So, what can we do to stop a maremma barking???

Firstly let me say, it is unlikely you will completely stop a maremma barking, but you can take some steps to manage it.

I'm going to firstly list some of the strategies that people suggest that I believe are unlikely to work and why I think this:

spraying your dog with a mist spray bottle - this teaches the dog not to bark when you are watching ...

throwing pebble filled plastic bottles or cans at him - again this teaches the dog that barking gives an unpleasant outcome when you are around, but not when you are absent.

keep your maremma inside more - well this may help, but does not really address the barking

yelling out a window at the dog - um the best thing I can say about this tactic is that you are just barking back at the dog!

Some strategies that can help:

spend time outside with your maremma and watch for what triggers barking.

when triggers happen, instead of punishing your dog, say good dog, that's enough and encourage the dog to stand or sit with you and observe what he was barking at - an animal crossing a fence, someone walking past etc. praise him for being quiet and observing

if the dog won't stop barking, try to get him to sit or drop or some command he knows, even walk away with you and give a good reinforcement for the change in behaviour

get a good walking routine going - this will allow your dog to have more variety of experiences and let off some energy in a positive way, and may increase his social skills if the barking is related to this

change of diet - if you suspect the barking is linked to too much energy, try changing his diet to a lower calorie intake, or think about the time of day you feed. for example feeding the dog in the morning just before you go out may leave you with a dog that now has lots of energy and is quite bored, home alone and able to bark the neighbours to distraction.

watch for times of day that barking is excessive - try making this walk time or a time to bring the dog inside for some quiet time for a little while

tools such as barking collars can work in extreme cases, but that is a whole other topic as they are not to be used lightly and can be cruel if not used correctly.

I think each person has to weigh up what is excessive barking and what is normal for a dog, and in particular for a maremma, then study your dog for a couple of weeks. Keep a barking diary if necessary to help you pin point the cause of the barking and help formulate a solution for your situation.

Pet shops rarely advise prospective customers that maremmas BARK and this is part of their nature.
Certainly some maremmas bark more than others, but it is something important to alwasy take into consideration!
A responsible breeder will check the details of a prospective owner before accepting them to take one of their pups, but of course pet shops simply want a quick sale and will sell them to anyone.

One of the most commno reasons is that people buy a maremma 'on a whim', seeing a cute fluffy puppy in a pet shop, and find that they have taken on something that is totally inappropriate for their actual situation.

A lot of people think they would like to get a puppy for their children. This sounds so nice, however the 8 week old maremma pup in a shop is going to be heavier than your chidren quickly, and yet be puppy-like in behaviour for at least a year. Large breeds like the maremma are actually slower to mature, and owners who do not understand dogs, often cannot control a large pup with young children (often they can't control those children well either, but that's another story...)

A responsible breeder will check the details of a prospective owner before accepting them to take one of their pups, but of course pet shops simply want a quick sale and will sell them to anyone.

Maremmas get surrended up to pounds or to rescue for a huge range of reasons.

One of the most commno reasons is that people buy a maremma 'on a whim', seeing a cute fluffy puppy in a pet shop, and find that they have taken on something that is totally inappropriate for their actual situation.

A responsible breeder will check the details of a prospective owner before accepting them to take one of their pups, but of course pet shops simply want a quick sale and will sell them to anyone.

Mouse 2 yrs adopted to companion home on acerage, was surrendered to pound as he was sold to a family living in a unit and barked to much.

Some shelter dogs have been strays, others have been surrendered.
Some have been displaced during a relationship break up, owners move somewhere they cant keep a dog, and occasionally an owner may have passed away.

The majority of Maremma who come into Rescue were originally bought from pet shops, & knowingly sold into suburban homes.

These dogs usually find themselves in Rescue because they have grown too big, shed too much hair, have become too protective, or bark too much for the suburban home. We are continually being told by owners that their cute white puppy has grown into a dog they did not expect to have and now can't keep.
Where ever our Rescues have come from, they are usually lovely dogs who adapt extremely well to a new family & environment, providing the new owner understands the breed and has the time to help the dog make the transition. The ideal home for most of our rescue dogs, is small acreage, where the dog can be a general farm/family companion & guardian.

Maremma puppies are unusual, very, very gorgeous & become victims of impulse buys when they are displayed in pet shop windows.

Breed information is not usually supplied to unsuspecting buyers who think they have just bought a cute white puppy.

The Maremma is a livestock guardian dog, very different to any ordinary dog, and needs a different upbringing from that of other pet dogs. Puppies raised in suburban homes are not usually successful, unless the owner is equipped with the right information from the outset. While there may be absolutely nothing wrong with the dog, he is genetically unsuited to an urban environment. People wanting to keep a Maremma in a suburban home, must have the time to raise & socialize the puppy according to the needs of the breed.
